Q. What career should I choose?
A. When you choose your career they don't list out all of the advantages at the beginning.
Farmer: Can calm spooked animals, treat sick animals, purify bad water, decide whether or not the dead buffalo on the side of the trail is safe to eat, and can buy food cheaper at the beginning
Carpenter: Can salvage abandoned wagons to repair their own without using the minigame, can build a shelter during sandstorms, and supposedly have a slower rate of wagon deterioration
Banker: As a banker you can "talk" the peddler into seeing her "special inventory" instead of bribing. And when you get the items to deliver to Oregon for X amount of money, you get extra money if you are a banker.
Soldier: Get more food in the beginning and have a better chance of fighting off bandits.
Doctor: Can cure/heal most diseases/injuries and snake bites, they also get discounts on medical supplies
Hunter: You get 10% extra food at the end of the hunting mini game (I.E. if you get 50 from the game you take home 55, you can take home a maximum of 220). You get an upgrade to hunting damage and reload speed - 2 shot buffalo and 1 shot bears with no inventory weapons. When you find a dead buffalo at the side of the road you can skin it rather than take its meat. Skinning it gives you a consumable item that awards 300 gold.
There is an extra gun available in Oregon with higher damage than the repeater rifle. If I remember correctly it doesn’t increase reload speed but has bandit defense (but again, I don't remember that second gun bonus 100%).
Explorer: Can get speed boosts from Indians, search for trail when lost (1 day instead of 4) can search for water (1 day). My brain is nagging me that there is one more benefit I'm forgetting but I can't think of it at this time. In the 3+ trips I've done successfully as explorer I don't think I've ever failed to find the trail, cannot recall a specific time of not finding water but do believe once I did not.
Also from previous it was mentioned that explorer is faster, I don't know if this is a flat speed boost or just because you don't have to take as much time backtracking etc.
