I find the best place is on the Chimney rock - Courthouse rock loop and also on the short trek to the Parting of the Ways. I've had poor results in the Flagstaff Hill loop - the one which needs 12 friends to unlock.

Looks like you're doing pretty well in the Flagstaff loop.
I've heard that the Courthouse loop doesn't give medicines, and that the Flagstaff loop does... however, I've not witnessed it personally.
I have received silver bars on the Devils Gate loop, and gold bars on the Courthouse loop.
Any of the dead end loops are supposed to be able to have the silver/gold bars from what others have found, as well as the pemmican, coffee, and turquoise.

For anyone interested in results for searching here are mine.
Location: Heading from Flagstaff Hill back toward Blue Mountains

Pemmican 3
Bandit Bandanna 6
Silver Bars 6
Turquoise 14
Eagle Feathers 16
Eggs 22
Spicy Chili 32
Arrowheads 35
Dried Fruit 39
Beads 53
Prickly Pears/Saguaro Fruit 86
Rocks 96
Coins total = 2970
Food total = 5550
Comments :
I got no medicines at all. This seems like a good spot since I don't want medicines and can get everything else that is important.

I just did a whole bunch more searches at Flagstaff and this time my results were far different.
tonight:
65% I got nothing
20% I got rocks
15% I got an item from the list above excluding rocks
This morning:
50% I got nothing
40% I got an item from the list above excluding rocks
10% I got rocks
randomness is a factor but over the course of a thousand (1000) searches that's quite a variation in results.

I have run both loops, I get a decent amount of spicy chili and buffalo jerky... I have gotten coffee, gold bars and silver bars as well... Of course lots of rocks, eagle feathers, etc... But if you have the time and patience worth it... Plus a good way to level up... Though you waste stamina if you stay in one spot, which I do...
coffee gives 5 energy
pemmican gives you 5 stamina (which I have yet to get this on a trail)
Bandit bandanna gives you small chance to not get stopped by bandits (not sure if this stacks. I have 12 currently and they are not consumable..)
silber bar gives you one trail note
gold bar gives you five trail notes
turquoise gives you 100 coins

The items you find you have to consume them to use them... They won't sell automatically when you get to oregon... Like to sell the beads, turquoise, arrowhead, etc you need to click on them to sell them... Quicker to do once you are at a fort because you won't get that prompt every time when your on the trail...

Just an fyi for people wondering if doing the loops are worth it... In 200 clicks or so, I received two gold bars, 1 silver bar and 1 pemmican... Plus many other items like spicy chili, buffalo jerky, etc... Oh and lots of rocks and nothing! Plus I leveled up two levels. So win, win in my book!

The game automatically cashes in your trade goods when you get to Oregon (cotton, wool, necklaces, etc)

Oh, and I found if you start to get a bunch of nothing in a row, I move around a bit and I start getting more items...
